... that's a tricky question, the controller is embedded on the motherboard. 
But it should not really matter. I use an eSATA cradle. After inserting the 
hard drive in it I do a dmesg to see if the kernel detected the device 
insertion then an "fdisk -l" to see what device the kernel is seeing. The rest 
is just a matter of "mount:.
