I tried copying the 8.10 lines from sdb0 grub menu.lst to the 7.10
menu.lst and adding root (hd0,0) to that menu but all I got was an
error.

title           Ubuntu 8.10, kernel 2.6.27-7-generic
root            (hd0,0)
<----- I added this line to conform to 7.10
uuid            773dfc5d-50e2-41ff-856e-6792808e3d19
kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic
root=UUID=773dfc5d-50e2-41ff-856e-6792808e3d19 ro quiet splash
initrd          /boot/initrd.img-2.6.27-7-generic
quiet

I don't know why there is an uuid line at all. It doesn't exist in
7.10 but I left it there.

title           Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
root            (hd0,2)
kernel          /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic
root=UUID=d6d52470-6775-41b9-814a-778b47ed37ba ro quiet splash
initrd          /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic
quiet

In the meantime I'm reading the entire grub manual I snagged from the
grub site and plan on getting to know it quite well. By the next
meeting I should be an expert on grub.
