Took me all of an hour to take the internal hard drive out and use the
external as the internal and install all over again.  Went like a
dream.

What gets me is that the 8.10 CD was so flaky about reading the
external HD in the first place.  Sometimes the external HD would show
up in gparted and sometimes it wouldn't when I was trying to install
it in what I thought was a straight forward manner..
