I see the tablets (and also the netbooks) as a second coming of the Newton.
I used my Newton (in tablet mode) mostly for content creation. I could write
as fast as I could and it would [usually] copy my handwriting perfectly.
Biggest thing was it didn't require me to sit at a desk -- I could write
while standing, walking, or riding in the car, without having to prop
anything up. When I wanted to do text editing or spreadsheet stuff, or use
it as a terminal, I could plug in the keyboard and it became one of the
smallest laptops of the time, pretty much comparable to today's netbooks.

Why have a separate keyboard? I like to have the option of leaving the
weight behind if I don't plan on using it, and I can write much more easily
in a standing position with a pad than with a keyboard.

If I do decide to get an iPad or a netbook, I will pay substantially less
than I paid for my last Newton (the last one I purchased, not the later ones
I was given).
