I tried looking around and found some promising links, which did not
deliver on their promises.

Then, a right-click on the power menu brought up a list including
"About"; the dialog included a link to the Indicator Applet website:

    https://launchpad.net/indicator-applet

which included "Browse the code"

This might be helpful, or at least get you to someone you can ask (the
authors are listed on the web page).
