Thanks, Theresa. That got me in the right direction. In gconf-editor, you need to *enable* these keys:
/apps/indicator-session/suppress_shutdown_menuitem /apps/indicator-session/suppress_restart_menuitem That does get rid of shutdown and restart. But there wasn't an equivalent way to remove suspend and hibernate. These keys looked like they might work by setting them to "nothing": /apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/hibernate /apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/suspend but they did not, even after logging out and back in. Eventually, I found this solution: http://linuxexpresso.wordpress.com/2010/05/09/disable-suspend-and-hibernate-ubuntu/ It doesn't remove suspend and hibernate from the menu, but does inactivate them. So they are functionally equivalent to doing a lock screen. Not perfect, but works good enough for now. Thanks, Don and Theresa, for all your input.
