You probably do not want to use Time Machine to back up VMs. See

“Virtualization apps”.
If you use Parallels, you should read this KB article, which says you
CAN back up VMs with Time Machine: http://kb.parallels.com/en/8827
VMWare says do NOT back up VMs with Time Machine:
