Bummer.

Given a choice between dialup (even with a 56k modem)
and DirecPC, the second one is significantly better
if it is affordable.

In the US, about 5% of the connections to the Internet
are via broadband (DSL or Cable Modem). I got
cable in Jan '00. Had I known how good it would
be, I would have signed up a few months earlier
when it first became available in my area. It is
not perfect (the very few times it goes out, I
have a dialup connection as a backup
to get to the Net), but it is very good. One
of the best things about it (there are so many)
is free long distance phone calls anywhere in
the 50 US states via DialPad. While are
some latency problems, (1/4 to 1/2 sec delays)
you learn to adjust how you use it - don't speak
over the other person, etc.

Perhaps wireless will come your way soon.
That might give you additional options.

Good luck,

Bob
