You picked up on that one real quick, Brian, and, no, no 'general' public to
it, no kids wanting to just play, no games at all, and, yes, we are very
picky. When it comes to security (essentially, we're 24/7) there's a high
degree of maturity, common sense and respect involved. Those 'drop ins' are
more personal referrals...such as the serious students that (for example)
come by way of a college professor that is also a stock club member who also
teaches various Office components. Occasionally there's visiting
professionals (attorneys, etc) and business folk that have business in town
or at the local county courthouse, etc. We're still not completely
satisfied with international pc-telephone call (browser or program based)
capabilities yet, however those few folk are known locals that come by way
of the convenience store next door (owner, too, is a stock club member) and
are looking for an alternative to purchasing phone cards every week (most
routinely call home to Mexico, we're in East Texas). Something else, we've
recently installed that looks to be working very good is FusionOne
(fusionone.com) that periodically synchronizes all bookmarks, address book,
etc) on all machines thereby eliminating the need to use the same machine by
the same person each time. While all machines are networked together and
have floppies we're really starting to like the idea of burning cd's (we
have 2 cd-r/rw)...spools of 50 for about $20US at the local Wal-Mart,
cheaper than floppies. There is a full kitchen, however, all the grease etc
is something early on we were against. So at this time, we smoke beef and
chicken outside and prepare non-greasy side and ala carte dishes. Coffee
and soda are available. It is much more of a private organization/place and
as such by not allowing it to be a per se public place then there is no
problems with all the smokers (almost all are) and occasionally if someone
wants to drink a beer purchased from the convenience store while visiting
well, that's cool, too and no liquor license is required. We have a space
on the wall waiting for a wide screen TV (satellite dish is already outside)
to go with the round glass coffee table and living room furniture. Much of
what is here has been a small community effort which has included a wide
assortment of donations. What is gradually developing is much more of a
community/family atmosphere. People tend to be more appreciative and
protective when they have an interest. I would add this is a small country
town of about 30k population and we're not in town or close to the local
university, instead we're a few miles out in the country. Two folk jumped
walked in, gotta go, moe later and best to you!

Since your system (as I understand it) is used by the
general public AND stock tradeing systems, I hope that
you are useing EXTREEMLY good security. You don't want
someone to end up loosing all their money because a
surfer/gamer somehow was able to fiddle around with
something on the day tradeing system/accounts. That,
and any possable lawsuits, would be a lot more costly
than the little bit of income you get from the public
users.
