Getting free webspace is one thing and getting free design is another. I am a software developer myself and take my advice. Instead of asking a friend to design your site [even though it may be your best friend]
* You will not get a commitment on time schedule. since it is for free its acceptable
* Many ideas will remain on paper and never implemented
* No system study will be done. He / She will design the basic site for you.
What's the solution ?
* If he / she is a real professional give that person some stake in the portal's share like stocks or percentage of profit or even partnership and incentive to deliver it really well.
* Insist on paying him /her for the service. free can land you on obligation or even severed relations over a period of time.
* None of the ecommerce software's come for free. If they are free then they are just basic softwares or in many cases shareware versions. If you are getting a professional version for free. Its "pirated". All ecommerce applications vendors now have an automatic authentication system where every day if the site is live an hidden email is sent from the server informing the vendor the license details, If it is pirated domain details and transactions information is sent by the software.
If it is a pirated software, they can ask your service provider to cancel your domain name and in an extreme case file a case against you for piracy They can even remotely disable your application.
If you think this is only in story books or a BOND movie. Well all major companies use them today, the ecom applications i have designed for some US based companies, this is a default feature.
using so called "free" software on office LAN will not be a botheration but loading the application on internet can land you in big trouble.

Dear Dharmanath,
Thanx for your reply. Admitingly Im new to web design and web hosting and
didnot understand half of what you just wrote. Maybe my email was not clear
enogh , so I will try to simplify some things.
When I say cheep I think of f. example 150 $ per mounth in return for me
being able to gat my reg. domain name, ca 15 pop email, many email
forwarding, real audio/video, shoping, paying online through my site .... and
without baners on my page that I didnot intend to have as usualy "free"
providers require.
For the disign of the page for that purpose and maintanence I have pro web
disigner to take care of (for free - he is my friend, and free diferent
softwere needed)

Esko

The features mentioned below are provided by many free service providers
like nbci.com, Hypermart.net. If you wanna go solo and get a payment
gateway it has a charge and you need to buy a digital signature for it, to
put the digital signature in place you need SSL, to use SSL you need a good
paid shopping cart. If you are buying all the above software and services
for more than US$1200. Why the hell to go for cheap webhosting ? got for a
premium service provider like Verio or Exodus where they may charge you an
extra montly fee to use most of the services required by you.
The free services mentioned above [plus many more] give you all the
functionality you are looking for [except may be the realaudio streaming]
