Probe into stray shot
By Carloine Hastie
A top-level investigation was launched today after it emerged a police
bullet aimed at a rampaging bull went flying HALF A MILE across a Preston
park and a main road and landed just yards from a school.
Police claim that one of the bullets used to kill the mad bull ricocheted
off its skull. The bullet then landed in the grounds of Legends Nightclub on
Deepdale Road 800m away from the beast.
Although no-one was injured in the incident, an inquiry is under way into
exactly what happened and the matter has been referred to the Police
Complaints Authority.
Armed response officers were alerted after reports that a raging bull had
escaped from the Cattle Market on Brook Street.
The animal charged through the streets, crossed over Blackpool Road and made
its way to Moor Park as onlookers watched in disbelief.
The Armed Response Team was drafted in and nearby schools were warned to
keep their pupils indoors.
The helicopter was called in to keep its eye on the bulls whereabouts while
the police marksman shot the animal dead.
Chief Supt Bob Thompson, of Lancashire Police, said: It is standard
operational procedure for us to inquire into any incident where a firearm
has been discharged by a police officer in the course of duty.
We have information that the whole or part of a shot used to incapacitate
the animal may have ricocheted and we are also looking into this matter.
No-one was injured during the incident.
A senior officer from the Forces Professional Standards Unit has been
appointed to inquire into all the circumstances.

I want to know why the hell they needed the police helicopter? I can tell
you that it only did two flights on Friday, as my office is next to it's
landing pad. Perhaps they were bored? As for why they didn't use a shotgun,
I don't know. A rifle would have been a good idea. It doesn't say, but I bet
they shot it with a bloody hollow-point 9mm from an MP-5!
What did they do to random bulls before the invention of the machinegun and
the helicopter?

The police don't use hollowpoints from their MP5s, they have to use softpoint
which has led to RG developing a load specifically for the police, though
some of them use the Winchester 95gr JSP or the Samson 100gr JSP. And
a distressing number use FMJ.
Which brings me to another point, while expanding ammo might be Section 5,
what about frangible ammo like Glaser Safety Slug? That's not designed
or adapted to expand, it's designed to fragment.
