Funny enough one of the IT engineers at one of my
client's sites was putting together a suit of chain
mail. He was hand making all the links and putting them
together manually. It was taking him a long time.
Many years ago I was involved in some role games for
which I acquired a suit of 'string mail'. This was (is
as its still in the loft) a suit woken form a thick
code and then dipped in copper. It looks like a suit
of mail and is a lot lighter.
