Hmm, basically your friend is in for a fun time. First
of all, is it to be used in re-enactment combat? If it
is, the original method was to make lots of rings by
wrapping wire around a bar & then cutting it. Then
the rings were interlinked and the two ends of the
rings were hammered flat & riveted together. For each
ring. Repeat 10,000 times (probably more I don't have
enough fingers & toes).
These days the rings can be welded or silver soldered;
that can be tricky, or more usually closed with pliers
as they shouldn't be getting the same damage as in the
past. There are people who make it to order but it is
hellishly expensive because of the manhours involved. Make a
search for it on the web as there are armourers around.
