Finally. I have determined the problem with the legal system in this
country. With the proliferation of laws over the past, let us say, 50 years,
laws which moderate our behaviour at all times, in all places (or are
intended to), the very
balance of power has been altered. I do not mean that murder has been made
less illegal, nor any other crime. What I mean is, a hundred years ago there
were laws governing the actions of the bad guy alone. In the past, if you
were accosted by
someone, and fought them off, they were the criminal by virtue of thier
actions, while you were not, as there were no written laws trying to govern
a person's reaction whilst under attack.

Today, we have laws governing both sides. This means that the very act of
defending yourself causes you to break the laws of the land, and hence,
without for-thought or planning, you, through no fault of your own, are now
a criminal. Now, the police
become involved. The felon may have intended you great harm, but you stopped
him before he could tie your hands, by hitting him. Therefore you have no
proof that he intended to take your liberty, yet he has proof you hit him.
This means that the
police can solve at least one (sadly, normally the only one) of the crimes
that took place, your assault of your attacker. You have incriminated
yourself with your report of the crime, given name, address and details, and
the police have added two
crimes to the books, one GBH for which they have the culprit, and one minor
assault for which they have no details.
