From: Rusty�Bullethole, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Times 1.8.00 Eight sprayed with bullets outside club BY STEWART TENDLER GUNMEN sprayed eight young partygoers with automatic gunfire in an indiscriminate attack as they emerged from a South London nightclub yesterday. The police said the attack could have resulted in mass murder. It is the latest in a series of shootings among black people which police say accounts for more than two thirds of gun crime in London. A 27-year-old man was in an intensive care unit with chest wounds after the shooting, outside the Chicago Club in Peckham. A 15-year-old girl was hit in the arm and other victims were hit in the legs and arms. Deputy Assistant Commissioner Bill Griffiths said yesterday: "I think we are lucky not to be talking about eight murders. It is unprecedented for this number of people to be injured in this way. I don't think we have experienced anything with such a high level of indiscriminate violence." The shooting took place shortly before 2am in Peckham High Street as revellers emerged from the club, which police believe was being used for a private function attended by 200 people. More than one weapon may have been used, including an automatic gun. A witness said: "I heard the gunshots and ran away to hide, and when I came out there were two women on the floor screaming." Police are not ruling out the possibility that one of the victims of the shooting spree was the intended target or that it may have been drug-related.The wave of violence in among black people led Scotland Yard last week to set up a 160-strong team, codenamed Operation Trident, to tackle the problem. Lee Jasper, a black community leader and a police adviser, appealed for calm. He said: "The black community is now in a state of fear. We would not want to see any retaliatory actions. I appeal for calm." This year there have been more than six murders and 30 attempted murders linked to drug arguments and turf wars in London.
