Nine hurt in club shooting

Nine people were hurt when a gunman opened fire outside
a nightclub in what detectives believe may have been a
Yardie incident.

One man received serious chest wounds and eight others
were injured at 2.50am when the man fired shots outside
the Chicago nightclub in Peckham High Street, south east
London.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "Nine people are
known to have been injured by a suspect firing shots
outside the club.

"None of the injured people are believed to be in a
life-threatening condition.

"Details are not yet clear at this early stage of what
happened but the case is being investigated by the
Trident officers who look into Yardie shootings.

"The injured people have been taken to hospital but for
their own safety we are not saying where," added the
spokesman.

Eight could have been killed in gun attack

Police are investigating a Yardie-style attack on a
London nightclub in which eight people were wounded by
gunmen.

Police believe many of the eight were innocent
bystanders. They were hurt outside the Chicago nightclub
in Peckham High Street when gunmen armed with an
automatic weapon opened fire.

Deputy assistant commissioner of the Metropolitan Police
Bill Griffiths said: "I think we are very fortunate not
to talking about eight murders here. This was
indiscriminate shooting."

Five of the victims were female, among them a 15-year-old
girl who suffered wounds to her right arm and chest. One
man had serious chest wounds. They are all being treated
in hospital.

Mr Griffiths added: "I would say it is unprecedented for
this number of people to be injured by gunfire in one
incident. I believe many people here were completely
innocent bystanders."

Mr Griffiths said: "There was certainly more than one
weapon used because of what eyewitnesses have told us."

The senior officer agreed that there was a possibility
that one person was targeted by the gunmen and others
got in the way.

Passers-by described how they fled in terror from the
nightspot which had been hired for a private function
for 200 guests.

Lee Jasper, chairman of the Operation Trident lay
adviser group said: "This is an extremely serious
development in the level of gun violence played out
in the community over the last few months."

Operation Trident was set up two years' ago in response
to the violent murders of Avril Johnson, a successful
DJ, from south London, and Michelle Carby, from east
London, who were both gunned down in their homes.
