I suspect the lanolin finish was more to do with the
uniform riding 'well' on top of the vest than any real
belief that lubrication would help deflect bullets.
Several of the soft armoured vests are designed to be
'concealed' under standard clothing so that the assailant
shots for centre of mass rather than going for a head shot.
I suspect that the oil on the outside of T34's was more
to do with rust protection or preventing German troops
clambering on uninvited to deposit calling cards like
grenades and Teller mines.
The paste on the outside of German tanks was indeed
anti-magnetic and designed to prevent magnetic bombs
being attached by enemy infantry.
