The 39-year-old man was watching television at his home in the Wellgate area of the town when he answered a knock at the back door. A number of men forced their way in and shot the man in both hands before stealing his partner's jewellery. ..................... Apparently the gun has already been recovered according to reports on the BBC North local news, but guess what, there also appears to be a drugs connection. The man is currently being treated in the local hospital under armed guard. . ..................... . . And this on Freeserve, 5/10/00 Man shot dead outside store A man has been shot dead outside a Halfords superstore in Kent. Armed police were sent to the store in Ashford following a call from a member of the public. The area around the store on the Bybrook Estate, off Simone Weil Avenue, has been cordoned off. It is understood that no one has been arrested in connection with the shooting. No details of the dead man have been released. Customers shopping in stores on the retail park at the time of the shooting were quickly evacuated by police. Simone Weil Avenue, which leads to Warren Retail Park close to the M20 motorway, was sealed off. Stores were closed to the public but staff have been allowed to remain. It is not believed that anyone else was injured in the shooting, thought by police to have been carried out by a man. A hunt is still on for the gunman. A Kent Police spokeswoman said: "We have at least 20 officers at the scene. We are still trying to gather information from witnesses. The victim is yet to be identified."
