Reference Ryan's club, do I recall correctly that he used Dunmoore
Shooting Centre as his club for F.A.C. grant/renewal when, in fact, he
only shot there as a "paying guest". I seem to recall that this led to
the ban on guests at club nights and the necessity to inform the police
when clubs were holding their limlted number of guest days each year as
allowed under the Firearms act 1987. This also led, I think, to the
introduction of club membership as part of the grant/renewal process.
I was granted my first F.A.C. only a few months before Hungerford and at
that time the local police asked for details of club membership and
actually took the trouble to speak to the club secretary. Those were the
days, enquiries officers who knew about firearms and weren't
anti-shooting!

Well, wrong on both counts I'm afraid, the guest day requirements
were brought in in 1990 after a guest member shot dead an RO,
stole a .22 and then shot his ex-wife and then himself with it.
The requirement to be a member of a club was part of the 1997 Act,
due to the fact that Hamilton was not a member of a club (we're
told).
The police generally did talk to club secretaries even before
the 1988 Act, the requirement in the 1997 Act was basically
to make sure they did due to the cock ups made by CSP.
