Well, IG, you won't get any crude "flaming" from me, and not even any jokes
about flat feet (actually not an occupational hazard now that you all whizz
around in jam sandwiches and choppers...), but it might be interesting to
learn what you consider to be a "good" armed response unit. Do you mean one
that hits cleanly all the bad guys it shoots at - or one that has never
needed to fire a shot in anger? And how about firearms licencing? There are
undoubtedly some CCs who consider their FAC-issuing dep't is doing a good job
if it manages to reduce drastically the number of law-abiding citizens who
own guns. Do you go along with that? When somebody out shooting pigeons is
assailed by SWAT-style police squads, spreadeagled, interrogated &
humiliated, do you think (a) the police probably really do think he's an
international terrorist, (b) they are not sure that someone wearing a
shooting coat and carrying a 12-bore is a criminal but don't want to take any
chances, or (c) look upon it as a bit of fun, practice for the boys, and a
way of boosting the gun-crime statistics - ?
Given these things and much else besides, are you genuinely - I mean really
and truly - surprised that not only is there much "open hostility regarding
the police" expressed on this list, but that many upright citizens have had
their attitude to the police changed dramatically for the worse?

I think we've already had this debate, please let's not repeat it.
