Think the rot started in Vietnam when people would fly
in from Japan, spend the day at the O club in Saigon and
then fly back so they could qualify for their Veitnam
service medal. Senior officers,( Majors and above) were
given a "package" of medals after spending the required
tour, even if they never strayed from their offices. A
symptom of a Gong happy military, where advancement depends
on awards rather than merit. Witness Granada where more
medals were given than personnel involved, including units
that never got onshore. I am disgusted to see this when
managers are valued more than leaders. The air force is
following the other services. I have always felt tha
medals should be given for being shot at or for being in
a position to be shot at (campaign medals) Cheapening the
Bronze star and above is a grave disservice to the men who
earned these medals the hard way and it irks me that a
military lounge lizard has the nerve to wear them. Of
course these people have no shame in the firast place. An
aside: The greatre Algore only spent six months in Vietnam
as a reporter for the Stars and Stripes and was the only
enlisted man in Vietnam to have a bodyguard. Too bad the
other soldiers who were not as well connected had to spend
a year .
