In Digest Issue #20, John Hurst sent a copy of a story written by Jim
Spencer attacking the award of the Bronze Star for non-combat
accomplishment. It is absolutely true that we, here in the US, do just that.
The story was written to ridicule, but not to inform.
Military personnel, who do an outstanding job, on any front, deserve an
award for a job well done. Beginning about the time of World War one, the
military recognized that there was no medal for outstanding work, and
accomplishment in a non-war setting. Rather than create a new medal, the
bronze star was awarded for deserving individuals in a non-combat setting.
For combat awards, given for bravery in the face of enemy action, the Bronze
Star is awarded with a "V" clasp on the ribbon. No one in our US Military
mistakes one for the other.
