When I first worked for an English lead and other
things company, the blood lead levels were measured in
parts per billion, in my case 17ppb. They were
concerned because this was higher the normal 4-5 ppb,
but not hazardous.
Anyone approaching 40ppb was removed from lead work.
I had just been working part time making (casting,
soldering) white metal military recognition models, as
well as being a small bore rifle shooter (I did like that
sweet-smelling curl of smoke that twists out of the opened
breech - until I realised what it was...).
It sounds to me like Steve's measurements were in the
same units.
I have just spent the weekend casting bullets, so I expect
my levels would be raised this week if they were measured -
lucky I like bananas...
