From: nick royall, [EMAIL PROTECTED] there are 1500 drugs and their derivatives banned by the IOC. Originally drug tests and bans were introduced to prevent athletes killing themselves by taking certain types of steroids, now they ban anything that is considered to be "performance enhancing" including Coca Cola, Mars bars, hay-fever tablets, beer, some chewing gums and the contraceptive pill. It is a 200 million pounds a year business keeping doctors in employment who would otherwise have been struck off for their behaviour (well, one of them) and to what benefit? Who decides what should and shouldn't be taken legally is a moot point, in Glasgow the misuse of epilepsy controlling drugs is rife, does that mean that they should not be prescribed to those who need them? How many addicts could be treated earlier if there was less of a problem with the legality of their actions not to mention a reduction in theft and other drug related crimes if logic was applied instead of bleeding heart mentality. Australia's promise to prosecute athletes who took cold cures really took the buscuit and the sooner the idiots realise there is no substance to their bandwagon the better it will be for looking at drug misuse in a wider context.
