The officials are at the finish line and watch for the flash/puff of smoke from the pistol. A Sgt in the RAF who worked for me was an AAA starter and he had an ex Air Force Webley revolver. There was a mention in an earlier posting of using a single action revolver for starting. This would not be feasible because the starter has to be able to fire a second shot quickly in the event of a false start.
