Having listened to this it didn't seem particularly remarkable, probably
more against than for, a couple of outraged hoplophobes of the "how could we
possibly" variety.
I did have to keep reminding myself though that this was a seriously posed
question for an hours duration on one of the Beebs main national stations,
who would have thought that possible even a few months ago.

I have actually got the program on tape and could be persuaded to convert it
to MP3 if anyone is interested, not sure how big a file it would make though
or if there are any copyright issues.

All I can say is that this is all very familiar to me, from my experience
during Hurricane Andrew. For months and months the Miami Herald had editorialised
about how no-one could possibly need a gun in this day and age etc.

Then Hurricane Andrew hit and there were no police, no police cars, in fact
most of the police cars had gone through the police station. There were
no phones, there were no street signs for that matter. If you found a police
officer he had far more important things to do. The National Guard was in
the supermarkets trying to stop people rioting over buying ice.

I would submit that Tony Martin was not in a dissimilar situation, living
way out in the middle of nowhere with the nearest police a very long way away.

It's very easy to sit and be pompous about how you've never needed a gun
and so why on Earth could anyone else want one, but the reality is that I
could say exactly the same thing about fire extinguishers. I've never been
in a building on fire so I don't see a need for fire extinguishers - but which
fool would sit in a building without one?

Better to have one and not need it, than to need one and not have it. If
there is a serious concern about kids/burglars getting hold of it then keep
it unloaded and locked up when you're not home, it's that simple.

Unfortunately I am forced to rely on a bayonet in this country.

Steve.
