BELFAST (Reuters) - Northern Irish police are looking for
a machine gun and ammunition which they lost in the early
hours of Monday morning.

``The Royal Ulster Constabulary...can confirm that
investigations are ongoing in an attempt to locate a
police-issued firearm and ammunition which was lost in
Strabane, County Tyrone,'' a police spokesman said on
Thursday.

The weapon which newspaper reports said fell out of a
police car in Strabane some 95 miles west of Belfast was
a Heckler and Koch MP5 sub-machine gun which can fire
individual bullets or bursts, the police added.

The loss comes as politicians try to bring peace to Northern
Ireland after 30 years of sectarian violence. The fragile
peace process has been deadlocked for months over the key
issue of guerrilla disarmament.
