You have trouble putting the gas plug back? Try putting
together a M1 Garand in the dark! Lots of little bits. By
the same token, if you had served in our army, you wouldn't
have liked that rifle either. Always thought stirlings were
used for poking around in buildings. As for absence of a gas
system, Cleaning the gas tube on a M16 is a pain too. We always
had to use pipe cleaners. Just as a matter of interest, the L1A1
is shorter and lighter than the G3, unless Janes is lying. Could
see the point if the SA-80 was a reliable rifle, but as they have
been recalled.........

The L1A1 is definitely not shorter than the G3, your copy of
Jane's must have been misprinted! G3 measures 1025mm OAL, the
L1A1 1143mm OAL. G3 does weigh 100 grammes more.

I wasn't even considering the M1 Garand or the M14, the L1A1
and the G3 are both better than the M14 IMO.

Sterlings were not used for poking around buildings, although
they should have been. The main problem with the M16 is the
gas system which shoots soot back into the action, which is
why I think the new H&K G36 is such a good gun.

Frankly I can't remember where this argument started but I
was never keen on 7.62 NATO rifles anyway. They're all too
long and heavy, thus the development of the 5.56mm.

Yes, I know you can shoot though heavier cover with 7.62,
but this is why the USMC use the FN MAG in the support role.

Steve.
