Not really about sailors but:
I worked at all of the USAF bases in Suffolk just a couple of
years ago for quite a while, and the weapons handling of the
SP's used to scare me.
At times we hade to have armed accompanying escorts and muzzle
sweeping while checking ID seemed to be mandatory, and one guy
managed to drop his M16 (twice) between his little guard hut
and our vehicle as we were waiting to cross to air-side.
Depending on alert condition, at times they would have M16's
with M203's mounted, while on guard duty.......
The best though was the crew who had a new toy, an armoured
humvie with quad roof mounted M16's (honest, I kid you not)
with remote control from inside, sighting throught a TV monitor
and controlled with a joystick......the operator said it was
better than any computer game he had played........OK,OK yes
I did get to sit in it :-)
It had just come back from a range in Germany, flown over in
a 'fat albert' all by itself....
I just had to ask why they had it in deepest darkest
Suffolk.....shuffling of feet, and some 'aw shucks, well, you
know...umm well, er, for crowd control.......just in case..'
Regards.
David.
