Commentators on the fitness of "Jolly Jack" to handle firearms safely may be
amused by this instruction:

"The greatest single cause of accident is the issue of loaded pistols to
sentries in circumstances where a cudgel or side arms would be a better
selection"

"In 1943 and 1944 one accident per week with small arms occurred on average.
Half these accidents were fatal and all would have been avoided by
observance of these rules"

"Don't use your rifle to lean on - it is not meant for this purpose"

"Never trust a sub-machine gun to an untrained man"

"Don't stand in front of the muzzle"

This comes from the Admiralty 1945 pamphlet "safe Handling of Small Arms"
