I think that a "Stockholm Syndrome" then develops
between said Government minister and "plod".
In the USA I don't think that one gets that as much,
American "posters" please comment, as the topmost echelon
of American Government are protected by the Secret Service.

I'm afraid that you have me over a barrel on that
phrase "Stockholm Syndrome".
Insofar as having any experience as you refer to,
I have none. The only run-in (if you want to call it that) with the
USSS, was when I was stationed at the Naval Air Facility, at
Andrews AFB, just outside D.C.
I was on my way out of Fort Washington, located
just south of the city proper, on the Potomac river, one Sunday
afternoon in early summer. I was driving slowly out - because
the road was quite narrow, and screaming up the road, with its
grill lights flashing comes a car right at me. I came to a stop, and
both occupants jump out, each with their hands on waist mounted
revolvers under their suit coats.
Needless to say, I immediately began to wonder what
the heck it was that I'd done! At first I thought it was the Park Police.
The guy on my side came up to me flashes his ID which
says United States Secret Service (I had both hands on the top
of steering wheel) and asks who I am. I show him my Maryland
driver's license and Navy ID card.
When he sees the Navy ID, he looks very surprised,
and for some reason profusely apologizes, and sends me on my
way! No explanation or anything (what the heck was THAT all about?).
Beyond this, I wouldn't know one from Adam, not having
met one who identified him or herself as being so.

I'm surprised I'm getting so many people asking me what Stockholm
Syndrome is. This saying comes from an incident in Stockholm, I
think in the 50s were some people were taken hostage and became
sympathetic to the hostage takers views. (I think they were
communists), when the police stormed the building one of the
hostages threw herself in front of one of the terrorists as
I recall.

Steve.
