<< GUN OWNERS PLAN TO BATTLE NEW CURBS

Gun enthusiasts were today preparing to fight strict new controls expected
to be announced soon by the Government.

Tougher restrictions on gun use were proposed in a wide-ranging report from
an influential group of MPs earlier this year.

Licences for airguns, now the biggest cause of firearms crime in Britain,
and a rise in the age limits for those owning guns as well as tighter shotgun
restrictions were recommended by the Home Affairs Select Committee.

The British Association for Shooting and Conservation fears the new checks
could result in strict laws that would stifle legitimate shooters but leave
criminals unchecked.

The group has pledged to fight any tightening of gun control laws.

It has threatened to join other countryside groups for a protest march
through London if the proposals are taken up when officials give their
official response to the report in the next few weeks.

BASC spokesman Stephen Lea warned the proposals would put the Government at
odds with "four million decent, responsible people" who enjoyed shooting.

"The countryside community feels as though its being attacked on all sides
by this government - hunters and shooters are bound to join together," he
said.

"The conclusions and the facts do not match. There isn't a shred of evidence
to support the call for stricter controls on shotguns, and licensing for
airguns is unjustified.

"Lawful gun owners are no longer prepared to be the scapegoats for rising
armed crime."

I nearly choked on my porridge when I read this. Prior publicity to any
action we take - whatever next?
--
I think PA News is jumping the gun a bit - licenses for airguns would
be the main cause of firearms crime in Great Britain if adopted<G>.
