18/06 (14:00) JUVENILE RECORDS WIPED OFF POLICE COMPUTER

By Martin Evans, Political Staff, PA News

The names of 140,000 young offenders have been accidentally wiped off the
national police computer, the Home Office confirmed today.

The blunder occurred when the database was being amended by an individual
sorting through the lists.

Home Secretary Jack Straw ordered an inquiry into the incident which means
that the records of thousands of youngsters with cautions will no longer
appear on the police computer.

It was feared that the error could have implications for sentencing, with
people appearing to have clean records.

But a Home Office spokesman insisted that there was a hard copy of all the
records and that there would be no effect on sentencing.

He said: "As a result of a weeding error a significant number of juvenile
caution records have been deleted from the police national computer.

"There is a hard copy however and the Home Office and police are considering
whether any of the central records need to be re-inserted."

He added: "There is no effect on conviction records or registered sex
offender records."

Haven't these people ever heard of back-ups? What kind of idiots are at work
here? It puts one in mind of the disappearing records relating to Hamilton
after Dunblane.

Ah, now I know why they don't want young people to possess guns<G>.
