Police launch dawn raids after North shooting attack

ARMED police raided two houses on Tyneside today in search
of a suspected gunman.

Homes in Harehills Avenue, Cowgate, and nearby Ponteland
Road were searched following a double shooting attack on a house
in Hillsleigh Road on Tuesday.

A gunman blasted out a downstairs window, showering a child
inside with glass.

The boy was cut on the ear from the shards of glass. Hours
later a shot was fired at the door of the same house, peppering
the woodwork with pellets.

Police said no one at the targeted house would talk about
the motives for the attack and door to door inquiries were launched

Neighbours said they believed the shooting was linked to a
drugs-related feud.

Forensic experts recovered pellets from holes in the window
frame and door.

Today's police raids were carried out shortly before 4.30am
but a man police were looking for was not at either premises.

No arrests were made and no firearms were recovered. Det
Chief Insp Joe McClen of Newcastle North CID said: ''Our inquiries
are continuing and we would ask anyone who has information which
would help the investigation to contact Newcastle North CID on
(0191) 214 6555.''
