HK ANNOUNCES PRODUCTION OF UMP IN
.40 CALIBER; WILL DISCONTINUE MP5/40
AND MP5/10

Sterling, VA -- Sustaining its longstanding tradition of
technological innovation and exceptional firearm quality,
Heckler and Koch, Inc. (HK) is pleased to announce production
of the Universal Machine Pistol Submachine Gun in .40 caliber
(UMP40).
Earlier this year, HK initiated production on the UMP Submachine
Gun in .45 cal. (UMP45). Fueled by a strong market reception, HK
German engineers developed a model .40 caliber. This latest
addition to the HK family of firearms will result in improved
delivery, more efficient production and a use of truly modern
technology.
With the decision to manufacture the UMP in .40 cal., HK will
no longer produce the MP5/ 40 and MP5/10 submachine guns, but
will continue to support these models for parts and maintenance.
All orders for the MP5/40 and MP5/10 that have been accepted by
HK to date will be filled, however HK is not accepting any new
orders for these models effective immediately.
HK will continue to manufacture the renowned 9 mm MP5, the
worlds most popular submachine gun.
The UMP45 and the new UMP40 offer the user the advantages of
light weight, low initial purchase and maintenance costs,
uncompromising reliability and precision accuracy with low felt
recoil.
Additionally, the production of the UMP40 will provide American
law enforcement and military organizations with ammunition
compatibility between their issue .40 caliber handguns, submachine
guns and patrol carbines. The UMP40 will be available as a
semi-automatic only carbine or select-fire submachine gun.

Pictures are on the H&K website.

I had a go with a UMP45 recently and it is awful. Very lightweight,
about five pounds, and using straight blowback. Very difficult to
control I thought, a Thompson would make more sense.

Might be easier in .40 but I tried an MP5/40 once and that was not
easy to shoot and it weighed a couple of pounds more. Actually
I've tried an MP5/10 thinking about it, but it had the two-shot
burst thingy so it wasn't too bad.

If they make a UMP9 that might be quite good, especially for coppers
patrolling airports as it weighs less, and 9mm semi-auto should not
be any problem to control.

Anyone who has an MP5/40 or especially an MP5/10 has got a collector's
item!

Steve.
