Cool temps again, but with a gusty NW wind 10 mph or so gusting to 15+. Headed south of NB toward Pollocksville, north to Trenton, old 70 west toward Cove City and back via Hwy 55. The lead group (I was back 50 or so feet) didn't make the correct turn going through town. I couldn't see the route markers from the side I was on so all of us made the same turn. NB police realized what happened and kept the folk behind on the right route. Meanwhile the 100 - 200 that didn't looped around downtown and came back into the main field behind 100's of slower riders. At that point it was pretty much every man for himself as far winding through the crowd was concerned. Made my way through by the bridge and rode solo around 10 miles and picked up the wheel of a 4 man line which grew to 8 by the time we stopped the first time at mile 20. Group didn't stick together, so I rode solo for the next 50 miles into the headwind. Finally caught a large group at mile 70 - 75 that was rolling 20+ (There was 4 mile stretch that had some tailwind. Knowing it was now or never I put the hammer down and caught up to them). The group was organized (double pace line) and we all rolled into town at 22+. Once downtown tho we scramble for a sprint finish. One bad crash that I saw. Pot hole in road, rider went down hard. He wasn't getting up as I rode by (there were already too many good samaritans there & someone was on a cell phone calling 911). A later report at the lunch stop up the road said he had broken ribs. Good riding overall. Did the Bend of the River Airport ride, typical COWS recovery ride, with a 30 mph sprint to finish. Made recovery drinks that much more enjoyable.
