Chris I did the Kerr Lake tri last year first weekend in June without a wetsuit and I was fine. Kerr lake is much bigger then buckhorn so the water out there should warm up faster then kerr. there were a good number without suits at kerr, but KP is right, like her I feel faster in a suit but you do need to try it before race day. if you can not try if before race time then I would not recommend using one. I just bought one from exterra for $100...it was a $350 suit. there are some great sales going on if you take the time to look around.

Water temps have to be below 78 deg to be wetsuit legal. I love swimming in a wetsuit; I'm much faster. Some people hate swimming in a wetsuit; feels restrictive. If you rent one and you've never worn one before, give it a test run the day before (atleast) if possible. There is a scuba shop on Hwy 301 in Rcky Mnt that rents wetsuits. InsideOut in Cary also rents. I'd call and price both. InsideOut will have swim/tri specific suits.
