Subject: Re: [COWs] Sat ride report(Henderson)
Well, I headed out solo about 2:00 or so and did the Old Springhope Road
route for 45 miles. Other than Tim's ride, mine was probably the most
eventful and sobering.
About 3 miles in my computer battery dies so I have no idea how fast or slow
I'm going. Cadence and heart rate is working so I had a pretty good idea
about pacing. All goes well, except the wind is shifting from N to W
constantly. Up through Frazier road, the wind is predominantly WNW. Turn on
Old SH road and it shifts to N for a front cross wind. That was fun climbing
those hills on that road. Anyway continue on the typical route we have done
before - Sandy Cross to VC to B of R to Tar River Ch Road. Here is where it
becomes sobering.
I'm rolling along out of the last shallow curve about 1/8 mile from 97. I
hear a motorbike (crotch rocket) coming up behind me. I start to do my usual
quick "safety" glance behind but before I could get completely turned around
I hear the "thunk". When I get my head turned I see motorbike and rider
flying and cartwheeling through the air and landing very hard. Rider
continues to roll & cartwheel for 20 - 30 feet in someone's yard on the left
of the road and doesn't move after that. Apparently, he had lost control and
hit the deep ditch on the left side of the road at full speed (no skid
marks) that sent him airborne. I turn around as I'm roughly 70 - 100 yards
down the road at this point and reach for the cell to call 911. Others who
are outside start coming up. One checks pulse; very weak. We can't tell if
he's breathing or not. Volunteer Fire/Rescue shows up along with Sheriff and
they evaluate. It isn't looking good at all. Other rescue officials arrive
and they end up pronouncing dead on scene. Meanwhile I'm hanging around
waiting to give my statement. One person other than myself actually saw what
happened. The rider was a 65 year old male. His name was Nate. I find out as
I'm leaving that his son was there on site. Everyone in that small community
knew who he was.
Needless to say the adrenaline generated from a great ride is now long gone.
Spent the rest of the ride in thinking about how life is short and how it
can end at any moment for anyone.
Please remember his family and the other folks in that community in your
prayers for their loss.
Anyone riding tomorrow?

Steve came to Henderson this morning and met me at my parents house out at
the lake. He wants hill training so I mapped out a route with the 3 roads
with the biggest hills I know around here. One of them being mountain road
that Tim has climbed a few times on his long rides. We headed out about
10am for 64 miles. A few stopes along the way for bathroom and water. At
one stop we met 4 riders with bikes like Tim's touring bike and louder
down with gear. They had peddled from Raleigh yesterday to Kerr lake to
camp over night and they were headed back. One of the older guys said back
in 1987 he qualified for some distance rise over in Europe. I'm sure Tim
knows why he is talking about but he said he qualified by riding a 200,
400, 800 and I think 1200k. Something like that. Anyway it was cool to see
those 3 guys and lady.
Steve did well on the ride. There are some pretty good hills up this way.
Temps were great at the start all the way to the finish. Great day on the
bike.
