Nick and Wally and I left DD at 1pm. Rode to Middlesex out Stony Hill Church
Rd and back on old 264. Windy out and back and we rarely got a sweet spot.
The SW wind turned out to be mostly south. Fortunately for me my much stronger
partners pulled me well and waited for each of my drops. 41.6 at 19.2. Tough
- we (esp me) were tired. d

Subject: [COWs] Breakfast Club Ride

The Breakfast Club ride saw 6 riders gather on Cloverdale at 10 am for a sunny
but breezy ride. Cool temps made the start brisk for Tim (riding a single
speed), Susan, Jim, LR, Pete and James. The route plan was out into the wind
to Kenly and back to Wilson with a tailwind most if not all of the way. The
group rolled out of the neighborhood and headlong into the 15 – 20 mph wind on
Airport Blvd, across Raleigh Rd Pkw, right on Merck, left on International and
left on Lamm. Over to Old Raleigh Rd turning right and up and over the three
sisters. After a brief stop to allow a tractor trailer to back up an maneuver,
Pete decided to roll a different route and rolls on solo, the group turned left
on St. Rose Church Rd. riding across 42 then turning right on Wiggins Mill Rd.
James peals off and rolls solo leaving the four remaining rides of the group to
push on. Jim was pulling strong into the wind pacing the group steadily toward
Kenly. Turning right onto St. Marys’ Church Rd. the group rolls into Kenly and
turns left onto W. 2nd St pulling into the Fuel Dock for a pause to refuel.
Before resuming the ride Susan has adjust her kit and places her extra items in
her jersey pocket making an unusual lump that Tim points out. This lump
appears to be, as we will later see, the strategic move #1 by Susan. After the
stop the group continued on W 2nd St, across the railroad tracks before turning
onto Scott Rd. Now the tailwind kicks in. The pace to this point was whatever
the group could muster, now the speed crosses 20 and doesn’t look back. Scott
Rd became Frank Rd. and the group goes right onto 581, left on Upper Black
Creek Church Rd and right on Little Rock Church Rd. into Lucama. Across 301 on
Radford Rd the group remembered how different the area looked a year ago. A
left on Quaker Rd. and right on Downing set up the final stage of the day. The
ride had been a civil affair to this point but as the turn was made with Susan
Pulling and Jim in pursuit Susan makes strategic move #2. As the turn is made
Susan and Jim both take a drink from their water bottles and everyone is
relaxed but as Susan returns her bottle to its cage she appears to make a gear
change. The carefully plotted strategy works. She catches then group a bit
flatfooted, ups her pace. As she hammers, the lump in her jersey pocket seems
to be enhancing her aerodynamics. She holds the lead all the way to the light
at Forest Hills Rd. taking the Green jersey for the day. All agree the lady
did well. The ride ends up with 40 miles and a deceiving 17 avg.

A beautiful day with a great group. Glad to be on A bike.
