Wanted to join the 2pm ride, but my legs were a bit sore from my
morning work in Rolesville...

Granite Falls Triathlon, 120+ eager triathletes ready to go...

A quick 300y pool swim (8:03 start for me), at the really nice GF Swim
and Athletic Club... the 15 second stagger start gave me all the room
I needed for a fairly fast swim... while trying to manage the internal
anxiety of race start.

Wet and winded into transition 1... it was time to hit the road. The
bike course was a challenging (for me) 10 miles of hills and fast
flats, luckily the wind was of little consequence during the 8 am
hour. My CatEye pegged at 37 top downhill speed and event results
show a bike leg time of 29:41. There were quite a few long hills that
required more shifting than I've ever done in the 11 months I've been
riding. I passed a number of riders, but was never overtaken myself.
Just luck, I'm sure... but a big boost of confidence!

At T2, I would have loved to have sat on my shoe change bucket and
rested a while, but knew there was no time for that! My transition
spot was at the end of a row and I looked over my right shoulder,
while changing into my running shoes, to find an entire family
watching my transition maneuvers. I was breathing really hard at this
point and a bit sweaty... I'll bet they thought I'd keel over at any
moment.

I left a lot of leg power on the bike course, as my ~8 minute mile
average 5K time shows. The run leg had some hills and ~3/4 mile of
trail, both made the course a demanding one. My run start was slow,
as my right calf tried to cramp up on me and my legs felt really
heavy... but everything settled down after the first mile or so. The
ladies overall winner passed me on the run. I was just glad to see
the calf mark on her leg showed her age to be 29... that was the only
solace I could muster after being passed as though I was walking the
course. All joking aside, triathlons - and road biking - bring out
some really tough (mentally and physically) women... they're just as
competitive as any guy... and just as fun to compete with!

Finally, thanks to all the CoWs!! You guys and gals have made biking
fun for me and all the rides I've been on, in the last year, have
helped me become a halfway okay rider... if I do say so myself. :-)
