The disadvantage of that approach is that manual intervention is required, where using git avoids that and allows for a normal `cygport fetch'. The only other possibility would be for cygport to support overriding the src_unpack commands, and while that has been requested and I have considered it, I have yet to decide on a reliable implementation of that feature.
I heartily agree with this recommendation, and I am not nearly so biased.
