Finally, I've managed to install libjack. I'd done two things wrong and I'm
not sure whether either or both of them were responsible for my problems.
However, I'll flag them both up in case it's worth amending the
instructions. Firstly, here are the instructions that I followed:-

http://sourceware.org/cygwinports/

There's a step missing between 5 and 6 and another step missing between
6 and 7. Between 5 and 6, you need to perform the actual download (the
instructions create the impression that it's only necessary to *select* the
required files and then proceed to step 6).

Between 6 and 7 you need to close any running Cygwin apps (for example, the
Cygwin terminal where you just typed in the long shell command). If you
don't do this, step 7 starts but it bombs out half way through because
cygwin1.dll is already in use by another process. Sometimes you get a
warning dialog about this but SOMETIMES YOU DON'T. You can think that
everything completed normally when in fact, it didn't.

The second mistake I made was when typing the long shell command. If you
type it in manually, you need to leave a space between the backslash (at the
end of the first line) and the following quotation mark. I didn't - but I
don't know whether or not that contributed to my problems.

John

P,S. It might also be worth mentioning whether the long shell command is a
*one time* operation or whether it needs to be done every time you install
using the local download.
