[ I actually sent this email on the 26th but just noticed I had
unsubscribed last January ... weird ... back on the saddle again ]

Got a new laptop, trying to install gnome-terminal. Nightmare. I
went through this in early 2006 and I was hoping it was going to be
different this time. :-( It seems it will be better with 1.7 but
we're not there yet.

Anyway, following the instructions at
http://sourceware.org/cygwinports/ (which haven't change much since
then), I installed a small set of packages, the most important of
which is gnome-terminal. Basically, base, openssh, vim, python, X,
xterm, fonts, svn, keyring, gvim, gnome-terminal and a few other
little ones. Of course, these chose a bunch of other dependencies.

I keep getting these "xxx.exe has stopped working" error dialogs,
while setup.exe is running postinstall scripts (on the second install
after downloading stuff and editing setup.ini.) After that,
apparently all the stuff from the standard distro works fine,
including X and xterm but most of the stuff that came from
ftp://sourceware.org/pub/cygwinports/ is failing with the same error
dialog. These include gvim and gnome-terminal.

I saw an email from Yaakov about rebasing and C++, which apparently
doesn't apply to what I'm doing but I went ahead and ran rebaseall
anyway. Unfortunately, that didn't help either (unless I have to
reboot to make it take effect ... umm, I shall do that next.).

So, problem is vista is not showing me the real error and thus, I have
no clue which way to go.

At this point I ran out of ideas and I'm about to start shooting in
the dark. Any hints will be appreciated and welcome.

Thanks
