Yaakov, Thanks for your help in the past with this issue. Unfortunately it has come to bite me again. I was having issues with gnome-terminal and decided to update it, but my ALT key stopped working again. Getting the latest vte/vte2.90 did not fix the issue, so I got the sources, applied the patch (from comment 38) to both copies of vte.c manually, rebuilt and installed vte/vte2.90. This also did not work.
