Hello Harold, I went ahead and checked the XFree FAQ, and found that Aventail Connect is, indeed, one of the software VPNs with known problems.
I guess I will assume then that a box with Aventail Connect will not be able to bring the X server up properly even for local use. Thanks, - Carlos
