Okay, I should've read this email before I sent my last one :)

Basically, the 8 bit PseudoColor support is as good as I can make it.  I
don't use 8 bit color, and I don't know how to solve all of the problems
with mapping Windows colormaps to X colormaps.

You're move than welcome to look at the code and contribute your
knowledge/time.

In other words, the behaviour that you are describing is expected.
