I have run a number of mailing lists over the years and I have found this
"solution" to spam removal to be unsatisfactory.

First of all, it makes things difficult for those of us who have multiple
e-mail accounts/domains. It means that you either have to subscribe from
all or only post from the single address you subscribe with. Furthermore,
if your domain gets shifted out from under you, you may be unable to post
at all. (For example, your ISP starts aliasing the domain from
yourmachine.isp.com to isp.com on outgoing e-mail.) Or you change machine
names, or get your mail forwarded, etc. E-mail addresses are amazingly
transient.

Killing anything not addressed directly to the list will work for most
lists, but not always for here. Some of the more interesting mail on the
is has been Bcced in the past. (The RC4 and RC2 posts, for example.)

Of the two solutions mentioned, I prefer the filtering out of anything not
mentioning the list in the To: or Cc: lines. It works very well on
cutting out the spam. (On Perl5-porters it killed over 95% of the spam.
The rest came through a resent address that I had no control over.)
Traning users to not Bcc: stuff to the list(s) is another thing...
