VMWARE NEWSLETTER JUNE 2000 ISSUE I VMware is 2 1/2 years old, and the software has been out for just over a year now. Since launching the company, we have thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from the incredible user feedback in news and email. Many users already know about the VMware newsgroups on news.vmware.com. We want to further connect our user community -- thus the launch of this monthly newsletter. We encourage you to contribute. Please write letters to the editor, send usage scenarios, feature ideas, tech tips, and whatever else you think appropriate. Each month, we will select "the best" for inclusion in subsequent issues. We'll be giving away goodies and prizes as incentives for participating. We look forward to hearing from you. These maintenance releases are free to customers who have paid for the corresponding 2.0 releases. For more information about these updates, go to: http://vmware1.m0.net/m/s.asp?H1591920153X757261 ------------------------------------- TECH TIPS OF THE MONTH: ENABLE DMA FOR INCREASED VMWARE GUEST OS PERFORMANCE Microsoft Windows 95 OSR2 and later versions, including Windows 98, are capable of using DMA to access IDE disks. However, they don't often use it by default. Using DMA in a virtual machine can provide a significant boost in performance. To enable Direct Memory Access (DMA) in a guest operating system, go to the Device Manager (accessible via the System control panel by right-clicking on My Computer and selecting Properties), expand the Disk Drives entry and bring up the properties for each IDE disk. Under Settings, select the checkbox labeled "DMA" and accept any warning the Windows operating system displays. You will need to restart the Windows operating system in order to enable DMA capability. If you're a Linux-host user, don't forget to also turn on DMA on your host operating system. If you have IDE disks, use the command "/sbin/hdparm -d 1 /dev/hda" to enable DMA. The result: VMware, and all your other applications, will run faster. LINUX AND WINDOWS NT TIPS FROM TECHREPUBLIC These tips courtesy of TechRepublic, the IT Community Hub. WINDOWS NT TIP: BINDING ORDER If your computer is slow to launch certain applications such as Microsoft Outlook, examine the binding order of protocols. If you have NetBEUI and TCP/IP installed on your workstations and you connect to an Exchange server via TCP/IP, make sure that TCP/IP is the first protocol in the binding order. LINUX TIP: NETSCAPE KEEPS CRASHING If you've found that Netscape Communicator 4.7 crashes frequently, the problem may involve Java. Netscape includes support for Java, but it's sufficiently buggy that you're well advised to turn it off. To do so, follow these instructions: 1. Go to Edit | Preferences. 2. Click Advanced. 3. In the Advanced Options page, deselect Enable Java. 4. Click OK. Should you encounter a page containing a Java applet that you really want to try, reverse these steps to enable Java temporarily and give it a whirl. Don't forget to disable Java once again when you're finished. Wind River can now develop for both Windows NT and Linux on the same computer. Says Philippe Maisonneuve, director of the Wind River Vannes Development Center, "The productivity benefit is the biggest gain for us. I'd definitely recommend VMware to developers who need Windows and Linux access. It's simple, and it saves you time and money." http://vmware1.m0.net/m/s.asp?H1591920153X757263 ------------------------------------- EVENTS Come see us at: * PC Expo 2000 (Booth #2480), June 27-29, 2000, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center, New York, NY. * Microsoft PDC 2000 (Booth #524), July 11-14, 2000, Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida To learn about other important trade shows and events, visit: http://vmware1.m0.net/m/s.asp?H1591920153X757264 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS?
