When it comes to maintaining the size of government or giving more
money to police, there is rarely gridlock. Look at the ever-increasing
FBI budgets, for instance.
If there were a terrorist attack that the FBI says could have been
prevented by Carnivore, I suspect you'll see what little apparent
opposition there is now evaporate immediately.
Also a lot of the opposition from Republicans is an anti-Janet Reno,
anti-Clinton administration move. If (and I spoke about this in Palo
Alto on Saturday) Bush is elected, the GOP will not be as eager to
criticize the FBI/DoJ, even if the department's policies, and
meat-eating computer systems, are the same.
