About 150 Stockholm citizens showed up yesterday, 17th march, to remember Rachel Corrye, the ISM-activist who was murdered by Israeli military last Sunday. Shora Esmailian and Andreas Malm of ISM Sweden held speeches, as well as Stefan Villkatt, the partner of the murdered activist.
- The struggle for Palestine was the most important thing for Rachel, everything else, even our relationship, came second, Stefan told the Swedish anarchist magazine yelah.net. He also reminded that people are killed by the Israeli army in Rafah every week.
After the remembrance ceremony the people proceeded to move to the Israeli embassy to voice their anger over the death of Rachel and the occupation of Palestine that made this murder possible. Riot police were called in and tried to stop the activists from placing themselves near the embassy, but they refused to move and police started beating the mourners with batons. Police now also used pepper spray, a weapon which police recently were equipped with as a test. Today was the first time it was used against demonstrators in Sweden.
In Gothenburg a hastily arranged memorial meeting was held when about 50 persons participated in a public meeting to pass out fliers and encourage struggle against the occupation and solidarity with the Palestinian people and the international activists.
The occupational forces are upping the ante by increasing the violence. But it will not work - they cannot scare us away. We will continue to struggle for a free Palestine. For a global Intifada!
